DIY Resin Coasters Tutorial: A Step-by-Step Guide

Resin coasters are the perfect blend of functionality and artistry, allowing you to create unique pieces that protect your surfaces while adding a personal touch to your decor. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned resin artist, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of creating stunning resin coasters.

Materials You’ll Need

  1. Epoxy Resin: Choose a high-quality resin for best results, such as our Resin Art® Low Viscosity Resin.
  2. Coaster Molds: Silicone molds work best for easy removal.
  3. Pigments: Use Resin Art® Pigment Paste or mica powders for vibrant colours.
  4. Mixing Tools: A silicone cup, wooden stir sticks, or silicone spatulas.
  5. Protective Gear: Gloves, apron, and a mask to avoid inhaling fumes.
  6. Decorative Items: Dried flowers, gold flakes, glitter, or other embellishments.
  7. Torch or Heat Gun: To eliminate bubbles.
  8. Measuring Scale: For precise resin and hardener ratios.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Set up a clean, dust-free workspace. Lay down a silicone mat or wax paper to protect your surface. Ensure good ventilation to minimize exposure to fumes.

2. Measure and Mix the Resin

Follow the instructions to mix the resin and hardener in the correct ratio (e.g., 1:1 or 2:1). Stir the mixture slowly and thoroughly for 3–5 minutes to avoid introducing bubbles.

3. Add Pigments and Decor

Divide the resin mixture into smaller portions if you want multiple colours. Add pigment paste, mica powders, or alcohol inks to each portion. Stir well until fully incorporated.
Optional: Mix in glitter or add dried flowers and gold flakes for extra flair.

4. Pour the Resin into Molds

Carefully pour the resin into the silicone molds. You can create patterns by layering colours or using a toothpick to swirl the pigments. Avoid overfilling the molds.

5. Eliminate Bubbles

Use a heat gun or torch to remove any bubbles on the surface of the resin. Be cautious not to overheat, as this could damage the mold or resin.

6. Let the Resin Cure

Place the molds in a safe, dust-free area. Cover them to protect against debris. Allow the resin to cure for 36-48 hours.

7. Demold and Finish

Once cured, gently remove the coasters from the molds. Sand any rough edges with fine-grit sandpaper if necessary. Add a cork or felt backing for a professional touch.

Tips for Success

  • Temperature Control: Ensure your workspace is at room temperature (around  25-26°C) for optimal curing.
  • Experiment with Layers: Pour resin in layers if you’re incorporating heavy items like stones or shells.
  • Practice Safety: Always work in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gear.
